How to Download Sims 4 CC and Mods Safely: Patreon, Tumblr, and TSR Explained

Are you new to using Sims 4 custom content (CC) or mods? If so, the downloading process can feel confusing, especially when creators share their work across different platforms. Some release early access on Patreon, others upload full collections to The Sims Resource (TSR), and many post download links on Tumblr that redirect to sites like SimFileShare or Google Drive.

In this all-in-one guide, we’ll explain exactly how to download Sims 4 CC and mods from Patreon, TSR, and Tumblr, step-by-step. Whether you want clothes, hairstyles, furniture, or gameplay mods, you’ll learn how to download, unzip, install, and organize everything correctly so it shows up inside your game.

Let’s get started!

What You Need Before Downloading CC and Mods

Before you start downloading any custom content, ensure your game is set up correctly. If the Mods folder isn’t properly prepared, your CC won’t appear, even if you install it correctly.

1. Locate Your Mods Folder

Everything you download will go into this location:

  • Windows:
    • Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods
  • Mac:
    • Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods

If you don’t see a Mods folder, launch the game once, and it will generate automatically.

2. Enable Mods & Script Mods in Your Game

Custom content is disabled by default in The Sims 4, so users must manually enable it in the settings. Here’s how to enable mods and script mods:

  1. Open The Sims 4
  2. Go to Game Options
  3. Select Other
  4. Turn on:
    • Enable Custom Content and Mods
    • Script Mods Allowed
  5. Click Apply Changes and restart the game.

After every major EA patch, the game sometimes disables mods again. So, follow the process above to reactivate them.

3. Install a File Unzip Program

Most CC downloads come in .zip or .rar files. You need to extract them to access the .package or .ts4script file inside. Here are popular unzip programs that are safe to download:

4. Know the File Types

When downloading CC, you’ll see a few common formats:

  • .package → This is mainly for clothing, hair, furniture, and CAS items. These file type goes in your Mods folder.
  • .ts4script → These are gameplay mods (sliders, MC Command Center, pose player, etc.) These go in the main Mods folder and not inside deep subfolders
  • .zip / .rar → These are compressed downloads with multiple pieces of custom content. Think of a Sims 4 clothes pack with tops, bottoms, shoes, and accessories. You must extract these first before placing the individual items in your mods folder. NEVER place the zip file in the mods folder.
  • Lot and room files: Downloading lots and Sims uses specific file types that go directly into the Tray folder. These are .trayitem, .blueprint, .bpi, .sgi and .householdbinary. Place these in:
    • Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Tray

5. Your Game Version Should Be Updated

Some CC require the latest patch to work properly, so be sure to keep your game up to date. Luckily, the EA app notifies you when it’s time for an update.

How to Download Sims 4 CC from The Sims Resource (TSR)

The Sims Resource (TSR) is one of the largest CC platforms, with thousands of items for CAS and Build Mode. Most downloads are free, and you can install them without creating an account.

If you choose not to sign up or purchase VIP, your download will sit in a short 10-second queue before it starts. And, you cannot leave the download window until the wait is over. But, this is a small price to pay for the thousands of custom content and objects you get.

Here’s how to download custom content from TSR.

  1. Go to The Sims Resource
  2. Use the search bar or categories to find CC (clothes, hair, furniture, makeup, etc.)
  3. Click on the item you want
  4. On the right, you’ll see a Download button.
  5. Click it to start the download process.
  6. Once it finishes, open the file.
  7. If it’s .package, move the .package file into:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods
  8. If it’s a zip file, extract it first before adding the individual items to your Sims 4 folder.
  9. Open your game, and the item will appear in CAS or Build/Buy mode

Free vs VIP membership on TSR

While the majority of the cc and mods on TSR are free, some require players to have a VIP membership to download. There are also some additional perks to having a VIP membership, as shown in the table below.

Remember, you don’t need VIP to download CC. Everything is accessible for free! VIP just removes ads and speeds things up for easy access. Currently, the TSR VIP membership costs $1.99 per month, and you receive a free one-month trial!

Optional: TSR CC Manager

VIP members can use the TSR CC Manager, which automatically installs mods into the mods folder. This saves you the time and headache of clicking multiple links to download hundreds of items.

To use the TSR CC Manager, download it first to your PC:

After download, you can install mods directly from TSR, manage any new custom content you’ve added, and check for missing required items.

The TSR CC Manager functions similarly to the Sims 4 Tray Importer. Both help you save time and keep everything in your mods folder organized.

How to Download Sims 4 CC from Patreon

Patreon has become one of the most popular platforms for Sims 4 creators. Many CC creators post new items there first, including clothes, hair, furniture, sliders, and full CC packs. Some of the items are only available to supporters through Early Access, but most creators eventually release their downloads to the public for free.

If you aren’t subscribed, you can still download any content labeled as Public Release. You don’t need a Patreon account to access public CC. Just click the post and follow the download link.

Here’s how to download Sims 4 cc from Patreon:

  1. Go to the creator’s Patreon page
  2. Scroll through their posts until you find the CC you want
  3. Look for a Public Release or Download link. This is usually located at the bottom of the post.
  4. Most files open through Google Drive, Mediafire, SimFileShare, or Dropbox
  5. Click the download button and save the file to your computer
  6. If the file is a .zip or .rar, extract it
  7. Move the .package or .ts4script file into:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods
  8. Start your game, and the CC will show up in CAS or Build/Buy mode

What Does Public vs Early Access Mean on Patreon?

When downloading CC from Patreon, you’ll often see posts labeled Public Release or Early Access. The difference is simple:

  • Public Release means the content is freely available for everyone to download, without requiring an account or subscription.
  • Early Access gives supporters first access for a short time, but the download eventually becomes free for all players.

Creating custom content takes a lot of skill, time, and software, so supporting creators through Patreon is a great way to help them keep making CC. If you’d like to support us at MHM, we also have a tip jar available on Patreon.

Not All Download Buttons Look the Same

Some creators use a big Download button, while others place the link inside the post text. If you don’t see a button, scroll through the post to find any linked items. Many links appear as Google Drive or Mediafire text links.

How to Download Sims 4 CC from Tumblr

Tumblr is another huge place to find Sims 4 custom content and mods. Many CC creators post previews and then share a download link inside the post. Most of these links redirect to secure hosting sites, such as SimFileShare, Google Drive, Dropbox, or Mediafire.

Here’s how to download custom content from Tumblr:

  1. Go to the creator’s Tumblr page or search Sims 4 CC tags like #ts4cc, #sims4mm, #maxismatch, or #sims4alpha in the search bar.
  2. Click on the CC post you want.
  3. Scroll until you find a Download, Public Release, or file hosting link
  4. The link will usually open on SimFileShare, Google Drive, Mediafire, or Dropbox
  5. Download the .zip or .rar file to your computer
  6. Extract the file to reveal the .package or .ts4script file inside
  7. Move the extracted file into your Mods folder:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods
  8. Start your game, and the CC will show in CAS or Build/Buy mode

Not every creator uses a giant download button on Tumblr. Sometimes the link is hidden in the text with words like ‘Download here’ or ‘SFS link’. If you don’t see a button, scroll through the post or look for a hyperlink.

Because creators often upload fixes or updated versions, Tumblr posts may also contain multiple links. If a piece of CC breaks after a game patch, check the same post for a newer file.

How to Install Sims 4 CC and Mods Correctly

High-quality gaming mods folder for Minecraft, optimized for performance and customization, featuring popular mods for enhanced gameplay and aesthetics.

Once you download your CC, the most important step is to install it in the correct location. If the files are in the wrong folder or are still zipped, they won’t appear in-game.

I have a separate, in-depth guide on ‘How to Install Sims 4 Mods and CCs,’ but if you want a simpler version, read on.

  1. After downloading, open the .zip or .rar file
  2. Look for the .package or .ts4script file inside
  3. Move that file into your Mods folder:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods

.package files

  • These include clothing, hair, furniture, makeup, clutter, skin details, and most CAS or Build Mode CC
  • They can be placed anywhere inside your Mods folder or in subfolders

.ts4script files

  • These are gameplay mods, pose players, sliders, and advanced mod files
  • They must stay in the main Mods folder or one subfolder deep
  • If they are buried inside too many folders, they won’t work

After installing your files, open the game and check that Custom Content and Script Mods are enabled in your Game Options. If everything is set up correctly, your new CC will appear in Create-a-Sim or Build/Buy mode in the base game.

Recommended CC Creators for Each Platform

There are thousands of CC creators across the TSR, Patreon, and Tumblr communities, but some names consistently deliver high-quality, well-made content that’s safe to download and updated regularly.

These suggestions are great starting points if you aren’t sure where to begin. They’re also some of my favorite cc creators to use, so if you want your Sims to look like mine, I highly recommend these:

Best Sims 4 Patreon Creators

  • aharris00britney – popular Maxis Match hairs and clothing
  • Greenllamas – hairstyles, CAS packs, and coordinated outfits
  • Harrie – modern furniture sets and matching interior collections
  • Charly Pancakes – clutter, décor, and build/buy packs
  • Felixandre – luxury furniture and full room builds

Most of their downloads have both early access and public release options. You can also follow their public posts if you don’t want to subscribe.

Best Sims 4 Creators on The Sims Resource (TSR)

  • Mermalade – Maxis Match shoes and accessories
  • KiaraZurk – clothing sets, dresses, and outfits
  • Kardofe – realistic furniture and décor

TSR is large, so searching by creator name helps narrow down results. Use the “Featured Artist” labels, which usually point to high-quality and regularly updated CC.

Best Sims 4 Creators on Tumblr

  • Veranka – furniture, décor, and conversions
  • PowLuna – hair, makeup, and accessories
  • Hydrangea / Serenity – clothing collections and CAS packs
  • Peacemaker – furniture, windows, doors, and build sets
  • MSQSIMS – alpha clothing, hair, and accessories

Many Tumblr creators share download links through Google Drive, SFS, or Mediafire, then post updates or bug fixes directly in their feed.

FAQs: How to Download Sims 4 CC from Patreon, Tumblr and TSR

1. Do I have to pay for CC?

No. Most Sims 4 CC is free. Some creators offer early access for supporters on Patreon, but the files eventually become public for everyone to download.

2. Is custom content safe?

Yes, as long as you download from reputable sites like SimFileShare, Google Drive, Mediafire, or Dropbox. Avoid random re-upload websites or links that look suspicious, as they may lead to potential viruses.

3. Why isn’t my CC showing up in the game?

If your cc or mods aren’t showing up in your game, it could be because:

  • Mods are turned off in Game Options
  • The files are still zipped and weren’t extracted
  • You put them in the wrong folder
  • Script mods are too many folders deep
  • A recent EA update disabled mods again

4. Where do I put .package files?

Place them in the following folder:

Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods

5. Where do I put .ts4script files?

Script mods should stay in the main Mods folder or one subfolder deep. If they’re buried too far inside multiple folders, the game won’t load them.

6. Will CC break my game?

CC itself is usually safe. However, gameplay mods can become incompatible after major Sims 4 updates, so always download from reliable creators and check for updated versions if something stops working.

7. Do I need WinRAR or 7-Zip?

Yes. Most CC comes in .zip or .rar form. You must extract the files to get the .package or .ts4script inside.

8. Can CC slow down my game?

Yes. If your Mods folder gets too large or contains outdated files, it can cause performance and lag issues. Keep things organized and delete CC you don’t use to ensure your game runs smoothly.

9. Does CC work on PlayStation, Xbox, or Mac?

CC only works on PC and Mac. It doesn’t work on PlayStation/Xbox.

10. Is it legal to download CC from Patreon?

Yes. CC creators are allowed to share early access downloads, as long as the files eventually become free. Public releases can be downloaded without subscribing.

Final Thoughts

Downloading Sims 4 custom content is easy once you know where to find it and how to install the files correctly. You can install CC safely from TSR, Patreon, or Tumblr, and the steps are always the same: download the file, extract it, and move the .package or .ts4script into your Mods folder. As long as your mods are enabled in Game Options, everything will show up in Create-a-Sim or Build/Buy mode.
