What are Sims 4 Active Careers?
The main difference between active careers and normal careers in the base game is the ability to follow Sims to work. With normal professions, your Sim disappears for a few hours as you wait at home for them to get back. This can be frustrating and time-consuming unless you use the fast-forward option to speed things up.
With active careers, your Sim participates in their virtual character’s job and completes tasks crucial to their job performance. The Sims are then evaluated based on how well they work and promoted accordingly.
After promotion, your Sim doesn’t have to choose from two career branches, unlike normal professions where you must choose between two branches. They can also work late if they wish, but this isn’t a must. Here’s a list of all the active careers in the Sims 4: Get to Work expansion:
Doctor
The Doctor career was initially a base game career track named medicine. It was re-introduced to the Get to Work expansion pack to allow Simmers to follow their Sims to work. As a Doctor, you’ll be required to complete various daily tasks to fill up the meter in the upper left-hand corner. These tasks include:
Conducting tests on sick patients
Diagnosing patient illness
Treating the illness
Attending emergencies
The Doctor career has 10 career levels your Sim can pursue, starting from Medical Intern to Chief of Staff. Each of the 10 levels features various promotion tasks to complete to move to the next. For example, in the first level (Medical Intern), the promotion task is to treat two patients.
There are also wage bonuses for completing a daily task at each level. For instance, as a Medical Intern, if you use the Not So Blind Eye Chart, you get 192 Simoleons.
Detective
A detective is another career track in Sims 4 that your character can pursue. The career allows you to work in law enforcement to maintain the security and safety of your Sims 4 community. Some of your duties and jobs as a detective include:
Collecting evidence and taking witness reports
Taking mugshots
Searching prisons
Taking over a case
Patroling a community lot
Your work day may comprise one or all of these activities, and you will be paid based on your work performance. The detective career features 10 levels, including Cadet, Officer, Lieutenant, and Chief. The goal is to get promoted to higher levels, such as colonel and chief, to earn more.
Scientist
The Scientist career is another active career in Sims 4. It allows Simmers to work in the FutureSim Labs, where they explore the world of science and use various objects, including a chemical analyzer and a chemistry lab. Here, they can test samples, make new inventions, and create a portal to Sixam.
This career track has 10 levels, each with specific tasks for your Sim to complete. For instance, at the Lab Technician level, your Sim must have two breakthroughs. Note that your work hours as a scientist are 10 am to 7 pm.
Actor
Acting is a new career in Sims 4 that relies on fame and fortune. The idea is to grow from a struggling artist who gets uncredited work to a reputable actor in the film industry. As a start, you’ll have to join one of two talent agencies so you can find auditions and get gigs.
The actor career also features 10 career levels, starting from Uncredited Extra to Silver Screen Icon. To progress, you must complete the designated promotion tasks for each level.
Drama club is another active career in Sims 4, but it’s designed for teens and children. It’s the only career that young adults can’t participate in as it’s classed as an after-school activity.
Interior Decorator
In this career track, your Sim visits other Sims homes and community lots to give them a makeover. They can perform bathroom renovations, room additions, level additions, and gym renovations. Your work performance will be determined by how well you perform these gigs.
If you receive positive reviews from other Sims, you may get returning jobs or referrals to new clients. On the other hand, if you get negative feedback, you’ll get fewer jobs.
The beauty of the interior decorator career is there’s no designated workplace, and your work hours are 9 am to 9 pm.
High School Years
High School Years is not an active career but a pack in Sims 4 that allows Sims to follow their virtual character to school. Normally, when your teen Sim goes to school, they disappear for a few hours. However, with this expansion pack, you can attend Copperdale High School and complete various tasks.
In this expansion, you don’t have to go to school. You can choose to drop out and earn a high school diploma online.

What are Semi-active Careers
In addition to active careers, Sims 4: City Living introduces semi-active careers. These careers give you the flexibility of choosing whether to follow your Sim to work or not. So, instead of going to work every day, you can decide to stay home, let the Sim work from home, or have them take the day off.
An hour before the work hours start, you’ll receive a notification asking you how you wish to spend your day. You can choose to:
Go to work
Work from the home lot
Take the day off
If you choose to work from home, the game will randomly generate two tasks for your Sim to complete. You must complete them to boost your work performance ratings and increase your daily wage payout. Here’s a list of semi-active careers in City Living:
Law
The Law career track is part of the Discover University pack. Your Sim can choose from two career branches: a judge or a private attorney branch. The career has ten levels, each with tasks to complete to get promoted. However, you must first attend university and earn a degree in the law field before starting your career as an attorney.
Civil Designer
This is a career track in the Eco: Lifestyle pack, where your Sim works to design and present ideas for sustainable living in Evergreen Harbor. You must come up with effective solutions for environmental problems and educate other Sims on how they can make the world a better place.
Some of the tasks you’ll be required to complete in this active career include:
Designing blueprints and presenting them.
Organizing and interpreting plans.
Performing large-scale improvements to infrastructures and facilities.
Making fundamental changes in the neighborhood.
Engineering
Engineering is another active career track in Discover University that university students can pursue. The career features 10 levels, and Simmers can choose from two career branches – mechanical and computer.
Politics
One of the most exciting semi-active careers in City Living is Politics. It’s designed for ambitious Sims who want leadership. Your Sim gets to choose a noble cause, such as Simoleons for Everyone and works to enforce that cause. Your Sim can also choose between two career paths at level four: Politician or Charity Organizer.
Education
Education is another semi-active career part of Discover University. Your Sim can pursue two career branches: administrator or professor. To start, you must take a part-time job as a substitute teacher and complete tasks like grading homework.
This active career has only 5 levels, so you may not have to work hard to progress and acquire the required skills. However, you still have to put in your work hours and perform well.
Other semi-active careers
Other semi-active careers you can explore are as follows:
Critic
Gardener
Military
Simfluencer
Social media
Romance consultant
Video game streamer
Conservationist
Stylefluencer
Promotions in Active Careers
Promotions are an integral part of active careers. To get promoted, your Sim must perform various tasks. For example, in the detective career, the level 2 promotion tasks are to Go To a Crime Scene and Go on Patrol. If you successfully complete these tasks, you get promoted to level 3 to become a Corporal.
Getting promoted isn’t that difficult, but it can be time-consuming. Simply follow the on-screen prompts for your active careers to receive a promotion and level up. If you don’t want to spend time playing through each level, you can use career cheats for faster promotion. But this may take away the fun of completing various tasks in the game.
Conclusion
That’s everything on active careers in Sims 4. Now, create your Sim and start pursuing an active career in any of the mentioned fields. Happy Simming!
